About Me

Welcome to my practice! I’m Dr Ahmed Badat, a specialist psychiatrist. My journey into psychiatry was shaped by a passion for helping those who often feel unseen and unheard, a commitment influenced by both my personal experiences and professional dedication.

Biography

After completing my medical internship at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, I went on to do my community service at Witrand Psychiatric Hospital in Potchefstroom, during which I completed a Diploma in Mental Health. Since then, I’ve worked extensively in psychiatry, training and gaining valuable experience across diverse settings. I completed my undergraduate degree in medicine and surgery (MBBCh) and then undertook my specialisation in psychiatry at the University of the Witwatersrand, where I simultaneously earned a Master of Medicine in Psychiatry (MMed Psych) and the Fellowship of the College of Psychiatrists of South Africa (FCPsych). I had the privilege of training within the Wits Circuit of hospitals, gaining exposure to a wide range of psychiatric conditions and treatment approaches.

During my time at Wits, I launched a podcast aimed at advancing medical education in psychiatry, which has allowed me to share knowledge in a meaningful way. I was honoured to be featured as a researcher in Wits Curios.ty magazine for my master’s research and was awarded the Registrar of the Year Award, given to the most distinguished registrar nearing the completion of their training. Additionally, I published two articles in the South African Journal of Psychiatry, showcasing my dedication to contributing to the field’s body of knowledge. I have also appeared on a TV talk show and a podcast, sharing insights into mental health to foster broader public understanding.

Before embarking into my own practice, I worked briefly as a consultant in adult psychiatry at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, where I had the privilege of supporting patients with complex mental health needs.
